Common fonts to all versions of Windows & Mac equivalents
Good to know what fonts have basically the same looks in both platforms. It is sad that there aren’t that many of them. But I guess we should be grateful even for these. Maybe it’s just good for web-designers that they don’t have to “break their heads thinking” or spend much time choosing which font they are going to use. So my conclusion is: this saves time! And we can worry about other design problems.
Web-sites of the month: Best of February 2007
This link was full of another links of many information, I wasn’t sure what to look for..As I was going through them, first what got my attention was “roll-your-own AJAX slide-show” mostly because I am thinking how am I going to present/show pictures in my website. And of course..Javascript..I really wanted to take this course this semester, but it didn’t work out. I know this is important to master if you want to enhance your websites so hopefully Javascript will be taught next semester. So will I be able to create some kind of slide show just with DW? Or at least something simple like windows picture viewer?
I liked how cool 3D effect from photographs can be done “that easy”, I can tell that ”some people” are creative and it’s nice when they share their ideas. Also free fonts link, very nice, but is this mostly for graphic designers?? When we know the relationship: fonts – web?
Website idea
I would like to create functional website for new barn – Baywood Farms LLC – that is providing services just for one year. It is located South on Route 2, just couple minutes from Annapolis. Online presentation should help them gain new customers.
A Dao of Web Design
I liked presented idea of how designers must let go..Let the web as child go of of its print as parent. Which the writer explains is really hard for people from design industry..for who basically design means control. Flexibility and inability to control web design products is “cruel” for real/old fashioned designers..I think web-designers need to be some new species of designers who can deal with this flexibility what writer calls adaptability, what is most important feature of the web. People can make it even more them-friendly and this is what the web design is all about – creating user friendly web sites.
Design beautiful websites with Fireworks
Many instructions were repeating what we’ve already learnt in the class – but as we say at home: “Repetition/Repeating is Mother of Wisdom”. I like proper description of “rule of thirds” grid. I learnt about horizontal symmetry, idea to create own morgue file, expansive footer navigation, variable fixed-width layout, etc.
I was surprised that right navigation bar is strongly supported, also by author’s own experience that hand naturally tends to swing to the right anyways to get to the scrollbar. And for the left bar(which is more common), we just tend to swing to the left because we expect navigation bar there.
“Fixed vs liquid width” gave good comparison of two, but still, at the end, we have to design for both of them, depends on content, size, and off course what client wants.
Best Faces for the Screen
There was good information about how to use fonts. Mostly, what fonts. I try to look them up, but I found out I have to “leave” my office word, and find Avenir, Blueprint, Officina and more online. So I asked myself, why would I spent time on finding which one I like, buying it, etc, when at the end, average user will have just pre-installed typefaces, so my carefully chosen text font will appear on his screen as other sans or other serif? Hmm, I guess there is a reason..if I want to present it as a real artwork in my presentation/portfolio – but obviously, displayed on my computer(computer with that particular font) or printed.
8 Web Design Tactics to Help You When You’re Stuck
Most of the advices were something what I would expect to see in this article..They are something what if I think deeply enough(or have previous design-experience) that’s what would show up in my head or maybe I would work/create stuff according them by nature. Or maybe not..so this article is going to be very useful for me. What I would like to point out is the first advice..I found it very interesting..I don’t think it ever came to my mind: “Design from the inside out.” This one looks difficult for me, but I will definitely try it!
